Orion Laser Tech has recently received a promising evaluation report from the Bird-Safe Buildings Alliance (BSBA) in partnership with the American Bird Conservancy (ABC), solidifying its commitment to creating safer environments for birds while maintaining cutting-edge glass technology. The evaluation, conducted between July and August 2024, focused on the bird-friendly properties of Orion Laser Tech’s innovative glass solutions.
ABC and BSBA, organizations dedicated to reducing bird collisions through design and material innovation, have established rigorous criteria for evaluating the bird-friendliness of building materials. Their assessments are known for being conservative, with the highest threat factor (TF) ratings assigned to materials that might pose the most significant risk to birds. This evaluation process is critical for architects, conservationists, and glass manufacturers seeking to balance aesthetics, functionality, and wildlife safety.
During the evaluation, Orion Laser Tech submitted a sample of their “Surface One Laser Etch” glass for assessment. The submitted sample, a 6 mm MA35 dot pattern on 6mm monolithic glass with a 2” x 2” spacing, underwent a thorough examination to determine its threat factor and overall bird-friendly rating.
The results were impressive. The BSBA found that Orion Laser Tech’s laser-etched glass met ABC’s stringent criteria for bird-friendly materials. The sample achieved a Threat Factor of 20, indicating a low risk for bird collisions, which is crucial for reducing the impact of urban environments on avian populations. The glass also scored an average gloss measurement of 5.3 at a 60° angle, demonstrating its ability to maintain high aesthetic standards while ensuring bird safety.
